Knowing that you probably didn't get enough of David Maisel's photographs in issue #50 (he's the artist responsible for the beautiful cover), we wanted to let you know about his Deluxe Edition Monograph. With 43 color photographs and text by the great Jonathan Lethem, it's a must-have, no? For a bit of immediate gratification, you can also check out this slideshow at The New York Times.
I also can't stop looking at "Library of Dust," Maisel's collection of photographs depicting individual copper canisters, each containing the cremated remains of patient from a state-run psychiatric hospital. The patients died at the hospital between 1883 (the year the facility opened, when it was called the Oregon State Insane Asylum) and the 1970’s; their bodies have remained unclaimed by their families. The collection also includes haunting photographs of the asylum itself along with found objects from the grounds. Beautiful, sad and scary.
