So, yes, the U.S. was snubbed very openly by the Swedish Academy. We were shocked and amazed and a plethora of articles were immediately published in defense of contemporary American literature. But here's the shocker—they made their decision anyway. Congratulations, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio. Yours is a coveted accomplishment!
Le Clézio is a French-language novelist and essayist with over forty titles to his name. He has lived and worked all over the world and the Academy says that he is an "author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of [an] humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization." By that account, he certainly deserves the award. Again, congratulations!
